What is SUP Foiling and what is a SUP Foil?

A SUP foil revolutionizes stand up paddling! It combines traditional paddling on a board with the fascination of flying over the water. A SUP foil, also known as a hydrofoil SUP or stand-up foil, is basically a SUP board with a hydrofoil construction. This consists of a mast and wings that are attached under the board and allow you to glide over the water - almost as if you were floating.

SUP foil vs. wing foil

While SUP foiling is essentially an extension of traditional stand-up paddling, in which speed is built up by paddling, wing foiling is a combination of windsurfing and foiling, with the wind being the main driving force. We have summarized the differences for you:

Propulsion In SUP foiling, the board is propelled by paddling movements. The focus is on balance and the use of paddling techniques to make the board "fly". The athlete holds a hand-held wing (similar to a small windsurfing sail), which is propelled by the wind. The wind drives both the wing and the board with the foil.
Areas of use Ideal for surfing, cruising on flat water and even for downwind riding where the swell is used to generate propulsion. Wing foiling is great for surfing flat water, surfing waves and exploring coastal areas with the wind as the main source of propulsion.

SUP with or without a foil: the differences

The main difference between a conventional SUP and a SUP foil lies in the experience on the water. A SUP without a foil is great for relaxed paddling, yoga or smaller waves. With a SUP Foil from Surfpirates, you experience a whole new dimension of the sport: speed, agility and the incomparable feeling of flying over the water!

The right board volume for SUP foiling

SUP foiling depends on the right board volume. Generally speaking, the lighter you are, the smaller the volume of your SUP foil board can be. However, beginners should start with a larger volume to ensure the necessary stability and balance. Foil paddle boards with a volume of between 120 and 150 liters are ideal for learning the art of SUP foiling.

SUP Foil suitable boards

Not every SUP board is suitable for SUP foiling. A special SUP foil board, often referred to as a foil board, is essential. These boards have special reinforcements and mounting points for the foil. When buying, make sure that the board is explicitly designed for SUP foiling.

The advantages of SUP foiling

SUP foiling offers a completely new experience on the water. With a SUP foil set, you can reach higher speeds in very small waves, generally have more fun in small waves and enjoy the feeling of floating. The feeling on a foil can best be compared to deep snow snowboarding.

It's a fantastic way to take your SUP skills to the next level and push the boundaries of what's possible.
