Foils for Wing, SUP & Surf – Your Setup for More Lift, Control & Glide

Foiling is the new way to fly above water. Whether Wingfoil, Pronefoil, Pumpfoil or SUP Foil – the right Foil Set ensures lift, stability and speed. With the proper Hydrofoil, you lift off earlier, gain better board control and experience more flow on the water. At Surfpirates, you'll find foil sets for beginners, intermediates and pros – including personalized advice and top brands like F-ONE, Cabrinha, Duotone or Armstrong.

Which Foil for Which Weight?

Your body weight plays a key role in selecting the right foil. Light riders (up to 70 kg) should start with front wings between 1500–1800 cm². Heavier riders (over 80 kg) should choose larger surfaces from 1900 cm² upward to lift off earlier and more stably. The matching stabilizer typically ranges around 250–300 cm². Beginners benefit from forgiving setups, while advanced users seek more responsive and sportier configurations.

Which Foil for Beginners?

For getting started with foiling, go for a setup with a large front wing (1750–2000 cm²), a foil mast around 82 cm in length, and a fuselage around 74 cm. This combination ensures high stability at low speeds, forgiving take-off and full control during your first flight. Perfect for flatwater, light wind and all who want to build their foiling skills safely.

Which Foil for Intermediates & Advanced Riders?

Intermediate and advanced foilers look for more dynamics, control and speed. High Aspect front wings provide enhanced efficiency and glide. When paired with longer foil masts (85–95 cm), shorter fuselages for agility and smaller stabilizers, you get performance-oriented setups for freestyle, wave riding or speed runs.

How Does a Foil Work?

A foil consists of a front wing, stabilizer (rear wing), mast and fuselage. As you ride, water flows over the wing, creating lift. Your board lifts off and glides above the water surface. The larger the wing and the slower your speed, the earlier the lift-off occurs. Important: the angles between components directly influence flight behavior.

Foil components

Foil Components at a Glance

Front Wing:

Lift & speed – large for stability, small for maneuvering.

Stabilizer:

Balance component – larger for beginners, smaller for tricks.

Mast:

Height defines handling – short = control, long = more freedom.

Fuselage:

Connector affecting responsiveness & agility.

Foil Materials: Carbon vs. Aluminum

Carbon foils are ultra-light, stiff and high-performance – ideal for advanced riders. They respond quicker and provide better control at high speeds. Aluminum foils are more affordable, durable, and perfect for beginners or those looking for a reliable setup with great value. Many sets combine carbon wings with aluminum masts.

Foils for Every Discipline

Wingfoil:

Allround setups with variable mast length and wing area.

SUP/Downwind Foil:

Long wings, narrow fuselage for glide performance.

Prone Foil:

Compact setups for turns and surfing waves.
