Wingfoil
Beginner's Guide

If you're looking to buy your first wingfoil equipment, you may quickly feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of options and questions that come with making a purchase decision.

Introduction to foiling and wing surfing

Wingfoiling is one of the most exciting developments in water sports in recent years. This trend combines elements of windsurfing, kitesurfing, and foiling into a new, dynamic sport that appeals to both beginners and experienced riders.

Originally inspired by surfing and windsurfing, foiling has rapidly evolved with the introduction of modern hydrofoil technologies. A hydrofoil lifts the board out of the water while riding, significantly reducing drag. The result: a nearly weightless, silent glide across the surface of the water.

Wingfoiling starts with an inflatable wing in your hands, allowing you to harness the wind flexibly and independently, without being attached to a board. This simplicity makes it easier to get started than many other wind sports.

Whether you're young or old, an ambitious athlete or a recreational paddler — wingfoiling is accessible to a wide audience. The equipment is compact, quick to set up, and can be used on lakes, rivers, and of course the sea.

Its versatility is especially fascinating: from relaxed cruising to spectacular jumps and maneuvers, wingfoiling opens up new possibilities for adrenaline and freedom on the water.

Wingsize

Your first or largest wing should be approximately this size:

Spot Type<75KG75–90KG>90KG
Flatwater/Lakes5.0–5.5 sqm6.0–6.5 sqm7.0 sqm
Coastal Areas4.5–5.0 sqm5.5–6.0 sqm6.5 sqm

In general, the better your riding skills, the smaller the wing can be.

Board
size

As a beginner on your first day in a course, if you take one,

your surf instructor will probably give you a very large board (body weight + 50L–70L). The first session may even take place on a SUP without a foil, especially if you have no prior experience with water sports.

However, you'll typically make rapid progress and soon be ready to ride a slightly smaller board. Our recommendation is: if you're generally athletic or have prior experience in wind sports, your board should not be larger than body weight + 20–40L.

Otherwise, you'll probably want a new board again very soon.

If you already have experience in windsurfing and can handle smaller boards there, aim for the lower end of the recommendation.

If you're worried that learning the new sport might be difficult for you and you don't have much patience for practice phases, you can of course consider larger boards as well.

Foil size

The heart of your new setup will be your foil.

If you're already sure that you want to stick with wingfoiling long-term, it’s worth investing in one of the better systems right from the start—systems with many compatible components for your athletic progression.

Affordable beginner foils also work well these days for those on a budget, especially if you're still unsure how intensively you'll pursue wingfoiling.

Mast
length

As a beginner, mast lengths of 60–75 cm are recommended.

Over time, most people switch to lengths between 80–90 cm.

Shorter masts are less intimidating for some, easier to control, and have a shallower draft, which is helpful if your spot isn't very deep.

There are a few other things you'll need for your first session:

  • Helmet and impact vest for protection, especially in case of a fall involving contact with the foil—these are rare, but not impossible.
  • Wetsuit suitable for the temperature range in your area.
  • Pump that fits your wings.
  • Leashes for board and wing (some wings come with a leash, others don't). For the board leash, we always recommend a waist leash.

Don’t forget the right screwdriver for assembling the foil,

they’re usually included in the package. But leaving them at home can ruin your whole session ;-).

Other than that, we just want to wish you lots of fun as you start this exciting new sport. Nothing beats the feeling of your first few meters flying on the foil. If you have any further questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to us by phone or email.
